How many balls of wool do you need to make…?

Knitting or crocheting is a wonderful and relaxing hobby. You can simply unwind and have something to do at the same time. You create beautiful things and have a lot of fun doing it. Therefore, it's no surprise that more and more people are discovering knitting and crocheting for themselves.

But if you don't want to just start knitting or crocheting, it's good to know how much yarn you'll need for your upcoming project. Whether it's socks, a hat, a cute stuffed animal, a sweater, or a beautiful scarf.

For this reason, we would like to show you in this article how much wool you need to make different things.

However, it should be noted that it's always a good idea to buy a little more yarn than you need. The reason is quite simple: You can always misjudge the size of a project. For example, there's no set length for a scarf. Ultimately, you decide how your finished pieces should look and can always make individual adjustments.

How many balls of wool do you need to make a scarf?

Let's start with a classic. A scarf is the ideal choice, especially for beginners, as it's easy to start knitting or crocheting, yet still offers many variations.

Let's assume you want to knit or crochet a scarf that's approximately 180 centimeters long. You should allow for approximately 200 grams of wool, although this also depends on the thickness of the yarn.

Using our mercerized cotton as an example, we recommend buying four to five balls of wool. This will give you a decent amount of yarn and enough for a scarf approximately 25 centimeters wide and of a reasonable length.

How many balls of wool do you need to make a sweater?

With a sweater, things are a bit different. Of course, there are various styles and sizes to choose from. The type of knitting or crocheting also plays an important role.

Since we would like to take an average value here, you can assume that approximately 600 to 800 grams of wool are needed.

So if you wanted to work with our super soft, mercerized cotton, you would need about 12 to 16 balls.

However, we can only recommend using a little more yarn. Especially with a sweater, it's difficult to predict in advance. It would be frustrating to suddenly have to stop in the middle of knitting because you've run out of yarn.

How many balls of wool do you need to make socks?

Nothing beats homemade socks. Especially with the right wool, they're not only incredibly soft but also provide plenty of warmth during the colder months.

Although socks are very small compared to a sweater, you should not underestimate the amount of wool needed.

Depending on the size of the socks and the thickness of the wool, you'll need approximately 100 to a maximum of 200 grams of wool. For our mercerized cotton, for example, you can expect to need about 150 grams. This means you'll be perfectly fine with three to four balls.
